Race — variable results

Exploration digest for the survey stack behind book/race.md (Task 144). Grouped by topic; within each variable: question → time series → cohort trajectories → cohort component → period component with time-series overlay.

Coding: natural-answer y=1 (agree / favor / yes / object / likely); first-named side of two-sided scales (racopen, VCF0819, helpblk, VCF0830, VCF9037, VCF0817); more spending (natrace, natracey, VCF9050); VCF0813 some or a lot; too little influence (VCF9274, VCF9275); too slowly (VCF0814). Thermometers are neutral to warm (50–97). The Stouffer racist-speaker items keep the restrictive answer, to track intolerance of racism. affrmact is favor (was oppose); racpres is would vote (was would not). Stereotype items are derived: workblk_rel, intlblk_rel, wlthblk_rel, VCF9271_rel = 1 if Black people are rated below White people on the same 7-point scale. Segregation: opposite-race items are fit on non-Black respondents; rachaf_cum / racmost_cum make the school ladder cumulative; racclos_all counts no Black neighbors as none close (1972–1993). Feelings add composed figures by respondent race (ANES race: White and Black are non-Hispanic; Other includes Hispanic). Fits that failed their sampling gates were refit at draws 12000 and pass, except VCF0814 model10 (R-hat 1.022, ESS 212 on the period parameters; 3.8% divergent): its cohort and period components are provisional.

Full metadata: notebooks/utils.py.

Figure stems (Task 95 nested): figs/{gss|anes}/{var}/time_model.png, model10_cohort_trajectories.png, model10_cohort_standardized.png, model10_period_standardized[_time_series].png.

Layout template (Task 130 / 148): topic H2 → per-variable H3 with question + four figures. Regenerate with python scripts/gen_chapter_results_md.py race.
